Chapter 24
It was nearly five oâclock when we arrived back at the station. We entered through the same door and spoke with the same officer behind the counter. I explained that we needed to speak with Detective Ginnis as soon as she arrived.
âThatâll have to wait until after their shift change updates.â
âWho conducts the updates?â Renz asked.
âSergeant Tom Finley.â
âIs he a first or second shift sergeant?â I asked.
âSecond. First shift is Sergeant Lee Norris.â
âWe would like to speak to one of them, then. Doesnât really matter, but we would prefer Detective Ginnisâs boss.â
âAnd that would be Sergeant Finley.â
I nodded and made sure to give her a wide smile.
âOne moment, please.â She lifted the receiver and pressed the button I assumed rang on Sergeant Finleyâs end.
Renz and I waited only a minute before that same officer, D. Chase, said Sergeant Finley would be right out.
Seconds later, we heard footsteps approaching the door we stood next to. It opened, and the sergeant, a slender fiftyish man with a buzz cut and a no-nonsense look on his face, introduced himself, and we did the same. Renz explained that we needed to speak with him and Detective Ginnis as soon as their update meeting concluded. We had an idea that could possibly help catch the neck-snap killer. The sergeant looked interested in hearing more and said he and Detective Ginnis would be available to talk in twenty minutes.
We thanked him and waited. While we did, Renz stepped outside and made a call to the tech department to see if theyâd had any success with that elevator-camera reflection. Minutes later, he returned with the sobering news. The tech department wasnât able to straighten out the distorted image, and that was the only chance we had to see what the killer actually looked like without a hat on.
I was disappointed but had learned from years of disappointing results to expect little and be over the moon when we got a lot.
âWell, on to the next plan of action,â I said.
Renz agreed. âHopefully, the sergeant and Detective Ginnis will be on board with drawing in the killer. Weâll run that play for several days and nights, and if nothing pops, itâs more than likely that he has left town.â
Minutes later, that same door opened, and the sergeant waved us back. We followed him to his office, where a thirtysomething woman sat in one of the guest chairs. Common sense told me that she was Detective Ginnis.
After Sergeant Finley made the introductions, Detective Ginnis gave us a short summary of her years at the police force and said she had been promoted to detective eighteen months earlier. I was sure that had been enough time to get her feet wet, work a few murders, and toughen up. We would see.
âSo, what can the detective and I do for the FBI this afternoon?â
Renz addressed the question. âAs you well know, a dealer from Caesars and two female guests at the Tropicana were murdered night before last. Another murder, although possibly unrelated, happened near the boardwalk either last night or early this morning.
